Social justice must be constant — a way of life

seeing and being

You stand at the road’s edge
with a handwritten sign
that cannot possibly tell your story.
I see you.

You are hungry for food, for love, for private spaces,
for fear to loosen its grip
on this tentative life you live.
I see you.

People stare, quick to look away,
afraid that meeting your gaze might obligate them to care
or worse, that they might catch it.
I see you.

I don’t know your story or what trauma fuels your fears,
But if our eyes meet, we should hold our gaze
And know that in our hearts
We see each other.
