There Is a Beautiful Girl Who Calls Me Grandma
What a joy to have her walk into my life
You never know when joy will come through the door — so you should always be ready. And I was on Saturday, November 12, 2022. My husband’s daughter, her partner, and their 9-year-old daughter — “almost 10” — flew from Boston, Massachusetts to Portland, Oregon for a visit. I admit I was a bit nervous about the visit — not many people have seen me since I became dependent on supplemental oxygen. I realize now that’s more my problem than anyone else’s.
Note to Readers — I will call her Lucy — it’s sort of cool to have an alias!
The first time she stood in the doorway of my office, she asked if she could give me a hug, and I said, “No, not yet,” which I instantly realized was the wrong thing to say. In my defense, I have lung disease and am afraid of catching a respiratory illness.
Well, the next time I knew she was within earshot, I called to her, “Lucy, can you come to my office?” When I saw her in the doorway, I said, “I’m ready for that hug now.” It was a wonderful hug and I knew right away that she was something special — she was special to me and I hoped that I would be someone special in her life.
